"Corrupt Cop Leaks Firearms Raid: Inside the Greater Manchester Police Scandal

Published on 24 April 2025 at 14:30

A former police officer has been jailed after admitting to leaking sensitive information from police systems, including details about a planned firearms raid and efforts to expose police informants. The scandal, which involved multiple parties and crimes, has sparked renewed concerns about corruption within law enforcement.

Who Was Involved in the Police Misconduct Case?

The case revolves around now-jailed former officer Kenny, who accessed confidential police records after the arrest of her associate, Mottley, in February 2022. Kenny not only searched internal databases for details about Mottley’s investigation but also shared classified intelligence regarding an upcoming police firearms operation.

Shockingly, Kenny also attempted to uncover the identities of "local grasses" (slang for informants), all while preparing to attend a professional training course on handling police informants.

Where Was Mottley Arrested and What Was His Sentence?

Mottley, 28, was arrested in Spain, where some of his family resided. Kenny had also reportedly spent time there with him. Following his arrest, he was extradited to the UK to face charges. He ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office and was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Kenny’s Charges and Conviction

Kenny, who lived on Tennyson Road in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, admitted to:

Four counts of misconduct in a public office

One count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office

Her illegal actions represent a serious breach of public trust and police integrity.

Related Conviction: Whelan’s Offences Behind Bars

Another individual connected to the broader investigation, Whelan, of Purley Avenue in Wythenshawe, Manchester, also received a significant prison sentence. He admitted to:

Three counts of possessing a specified item in prison

Possession of a bladed article

Racially aggravated assault

Threatening behaviour

A bail offence

Whelan was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Public Concern Over Police Corruption

The case has drawn attention to the importance of safeguarding sensitive police information and the risks posed when individuals in positions of authority breach legal and ethical boundaries. It has also prompted calls for tighter controls on data access within police departments.
